A VIVID birthday

We've indulged this year and bought a few tickets to various VIVID Live gigs on at the Sydney Opera House. Last night was my D's birthday and we went to see Bryce Dessner, Nico Muhly and Sufjan Stevens perform Planetarium. We lucked out with great seats and listened to the strings, trombones and electro-eerie tones of Sujan singing songs about each of the planets. It was rather yummy!

VIVID (I'm not sure what their tag line is, but it's the winter festival of light down at Circular Quay)! We saw the Opera House sails - lit up by German crew Urbanscreen - the few projections we saw were minimal and there were a few cleverly subtle ideas thrown in...you have to look closely and you have to take your time.

Customs House was a delight of colour! We did not see the entire loop of projections, but what we did see - we did love! The kids will enjoy this one and we are trying to work out a night to take O and leave his wee five month old brother at home with grandparents! The pic above does it no justice. It's an urban scape where animated dudes are catching trains and buses, an aerial perspective shows the tops of city buildings then the rain comes, clockwork cogs take over and flowers blossom the ground up and grow. It's the same crew who did it last year, last years was great and this year's even better!

Last year we hiked around The Rocks finding the light installations in every corner, so there is lots to see. We took O to see the VIVID lights twice in 2011, and each time it rained. So rug up and stay warm! The lights are free and go on at 6pm until 11 June 2012.

And we've got two more gigs to go! Yipppeeee.
